Matt is a Principal Attorney at Quinn IP Law, and provides comprehensive counseling in international patent and trademark law matters to companies ranging from startup ventures to Fortune 100 clients.

He has more than two decades of private practice and in-house counsel experience in the mechanical and electromechanical arts for a variety of high-tech industries, including: automotive technologies (body, control systems, enclosures, interiors, lighting, manufacturing processes, powertrain, safety systems and seating); consumer products; green and clean technologies, machining tools and processes, medical devices and power tools. A registered patent attorney, Matt’s patent practice focuses on utility and design patent preparation and prosecution, patent validity and opinion analysis, product clearance studies, intellectual property portfolio management and asset valuation.

Matt understands the complexities of brand innovation and protection for both small inventive companies as well as famous trademark owners. Matt previously managed the international trademark portfolio of a Fortune 100 company, leading a team of trademark professionals and a network of foreign counsel with global responsibility for clearance, prosecution, and enforcement of the portfolio; he supports the firm’s current clients in the same capacity. As the practice leader of Quinn IP Law’s international trademark group, Matt works with clients to maximize the value of their global portfolios and enforce their rights in trademark, unfair competition and Internet-related disputes. Matt also specializes in complex technology transactions and negotiating joint development, license, and technology arrangements.

Prior to joining the firm, Matt served in seconded roles as Chief Intellectual Property Counsel for Jaguar Land Rover and Intellectual Property Counsel for Lear Corporation’s Global Seating Systems Division. In both positions, he advised senior management and formulated intellectual property strategy to support corporate business goals. His extensive experience within an automotive OEM and Tier 1 automotive supplier provided essential insight into the business opportunities and impacts resulting from a tactical implementation of a corporate intellectual property portfolio to maximize gain while minimizing risk. Matt also spent several years as a shareholder at national intellectual property firm Brooks Kushman P.C. and as a partner at Michigan-based general practice firm Warner Norcross & Judd LLP.

Matt holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from GMI Engineering & Management Institute (now Kettering University) and a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Detroit Mercy. He is a registered patent attorney and is also a member of the International Trademark Association, American Bar Association, Michigan Intellectual Property Law Association, and the Society of Automotive Engineers. Matt utilizes his unique blend of in-house counsel and over 20 years of private practice experience to provide our clients creative solutions to meet the needs of large corporations, universities and emerging and start-up organizations. Matt previously worked as in-house intellectual property counsel at Jaguar Land Rover and Lear Corporation to develop global portfolio strategies and implement cost-effective legal processes. As a registered patent attorney, he works closely with our clients’ technical specialists to protect their most valued assets and achieve their innovative and business goals.
